Amalie is Mayor for the Day

Oakley Vale student Amalie Lines was given the amazing opportunity to become Corby Mayor for the day when she donned ceremonial robes and a chain and took part in lots of civic activities.

Current mayor Cllr Peter McEwan collected Amalie, from Year 5, from school. She was given red ceremonial robes and a chain and was driven to the Mayor’s Parlour in Corby Cube. After being introduced to civic staff she learned more about the role and the mayoral regalia and was the first person in Corby to be presented with a gold commemorative coin to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday! Amalie and her teacher Mrs McDonald had a tour of the building before a quick trip to East Carlton Park where they enjoyed had a delicious lunch. Then it was down to business.

Amalie visited ‘Teamwork’ the Mayor’s charity which supports adults with special educational needs and gives them the skills needed for warehouse work. She clocked on and did some work on the factory floor before presenting hygiene certificates to Teamwork members and answering lots of questions. Then her busy schedule took her back to the Cube for a photoshoot  to mark the ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign where local organisations clean up the area to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday this year.

To round off her mayoral duties Amalie invited Cllr McEwan back to Oakley Vale school where he saw a scale model of the garden project the Little Ambassadors are working on before introducing him to her classmates. It was an action-packed day and Amalie was accompanied by Mrs McDonald who said: ‘This was an amazing opportunity. Cllr McEwan had been so impressed with our students when they visited him to talk about the Little Ambassadors scheme earlier this year that he invited one to become Mayor for the day. Amalie was lucky enough to be chosen and she carried out the role really well and was a great ambassador for Oakley Vale. She met lots of interesting people. Thanks to Cllr McEwan and everyone who made her day so special. I don’t think she will ever forget being chosen as Mayor for the Day, it was an amazing insight into the role.’
