Oakley Vale celebrates World Book Day and raises £300 for school books

Oakley Vale Primary enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters to celebrate World Book Day and raised £300 in donations to buy new books for the classrooms and library.

World Book day brings together children of all ages across the world to celebrate reading and a love of books. Now in its 20 year the aim of the day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Students were given a £1 book token, which they could redeem, at any local bookseller or during the scholastic book fair which took place after school on Thursday 2, Friday 3 and Monday 6 of March.

A 'character' winner was chosen from each year group based on originality and effort and they received a £5 book voucher to spend at the Scholastic Book Fair.

Principal Miss Emma Goodwin said ‘World Book Day is a fantastic way to help encourage the students love of reading. Everyone made a fantastic effort with their costumes and enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters; it was great fun guessing who they all came as. The money we have raised to buy new books for the classrooms and library is a great achievement and we are all very excited to read the new books together.’
