‘Celebrating Difference’ at Oakley Vale Primary School

Students at Oakley Vale Primary School learned more about world religions at a ‘Celebrating Difference’ day, which was part of the school’s recent Wellbeing Week.

Visitors from local churches, temples and organisations came along with their religious artefacts and explained more about their beliefs to the children.

Teacher Lauren Conlon said: ‘We, as a school are a diverse community and all six of the main world religions are represented in our students. Our children are so open to learning about all these religions and celebrating them, whether they have a religion of their own or not.

Visitors from the Buddhist, Hindu and Christian faiths came along to talk to our children and we also used our own school resources to share knowledge on Sikhism, Judaism and Islam. It is a real celebration and there is so much for them to touch, see and listen to. Every year group had 15 minutes talking to our visitors and exploring the displays.’

Mr Ashok Nathwani told children about Hinduism. He brought along a copy of the Bhagavad Gita and said: ‘The children are very interested and have asked lots of questions and have tried some of the yoga poses.’

William Duncan, from Northants Buddhist Meditation Centre said: ‘We meet on Monday evenings for chanting, prayers and meditation. It is very beneficial and peaceful.’
