At Oakley Vale Primary School, children receive at least 3 high-quality arithmetic sessions per week. The content and structure of this is dependent upon the year group. In EYFS, this may consist of counting songs and practice. In Year 1, pupils receive 3 sessions over the course of the week working through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach. From Year 2 upwards, children receive 4 sessions per week with two focusing specifically on the key times tables for their year group. Children will be given 3 questions and a challenge to answer in 5 minutes, followed by sharing of methods, mathematical discussion and modelling by the teacher. Questions are designed to develop throughout the week.
