At Oakley Vale we aim to support the children to develop their multiplication tables knowledge. We do this through daily multiplication tables work. In Year 2, children complete a weekly times tables test focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. In Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) children will be completing daily times tables tests focusing on speed, accuracy and the 2-12 times tables.

From June 2020 the government has introduced an online Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) which all children in year 4 will take part in. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently (the mathematics national curriculum specifies that pupils should be able to recall all multiplication facts up to and including 12 x 12), which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided. The MTC consists of 25 questions and pupils will have six seconds to answer each question with a three second wait between each question. The questions are generated randomly from multiplication tables up to 12x12.

In school we will work to ensure children are confident in the format and expectations of the MTC. In Year 3 children will use a practice version of the MTC once each half term. In Year 4 children will be using the practice format twice every half term.

To further support developing this knowledge a times table club is run twice a week for specific children within Years 4 and 6.
