Reading

The most valuable homework for children at Oakley Vale is READING. Please read and enjoy a book with your children every day and hear them read too. Sharing and discussing a book with your child is an incredibly important thing to do, it helps children develop vocabulary and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Every child has a reading book matched to their reading ability. For children in EYFS and Key Stage 1 this is a phonics book matched to the sounds they know. For children who have completed phonics, they will chose from a wide range of suitable texts. All children will also bring home a reading for pleasure book, this might be above their reading level. These books can be enjoyed with an adult. Children are expected to read at home to work on their fluency and comprehension. Reading at home is recorded in children's reading logs.

Wider Curriculum

Each term your child will be sent home with a ‘Curriculum Overview’ which will have some key facts about the theme they will be studying for the term. The overview gives suggestions on how you can help your child at home in different subject areas. We hope as a family you enjoy exploring and researching together.

Children can access Rock Stars Timestables to build their fluency of times tables. Throughout the year competitions will be launched on Rock Stars and participation at home is encouraged.

Throughout the year competitions are set based on individual subject areas for the children to take part in.

Involvement

We strongly encourage parental support with homework. We work together to ensure homework is completed and handed in on time. If you have any problems, do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher, who will be only too happy to support and help.
