Inspiring a lifelong love of reading through curiosity, imagination, and the joy of books every day.

Reading is the foundation of academic success and personal growth and we place reading for pleasure at the heart of every school day. Through a structured and inclusive approach, we empower every student to become a confident, capable reader—fostering ambition, building resilience, and nurturing a lifelong love of learning.

We offer a rich selection of high-quality literature where children encounter characters, situations and viewpoints that mirror their own lives, but also books which give them a window into the lives of others. Reading and discussing stories and non-fiction develops speaking skills and builds vocabulary, which are essential for comprehension and success across the curriculum.

EYFS & Key Stage 1 (Reception to Year 2): Building Strong Foundations Children begin their reading journey with Read Write Inc., a systematic phonics programme that teaches them to decode words, build fluency, and develop early comprehension. Through daily phonics sessions, children learn to blend sounds, read with increasing confidence, and develop a love of books.

Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4): Transitioning to Fluent Reading A range of evidence-based strategies are used to support children to become fluent readers as they move beyond phonics to focus on developing deeper comprehension skills. They explore a wide range of texts, building vocabulary, inference, and understanding through guided reading and whole-class discussions.

Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5–6): Mastering Comprehension and Critical Thinking In the final years, children’s fluency continues to develop as they engage with more complex texts across genres, analysing language, structure, and themes. Comprehension lessons focus on critical thinking, discussion, and written responses, preparing children to read widely and confidently across the curriculum and beyond.

Reading for Pleasure: Our ultimate goal is to instill a lifelong love of reading in our children. We are dedicated to nurturing a culture of reading for pleasure. To support this, teachers read aloud to their classes daily and actively engage students in meaningful conversations about their independent reading choices.
